Our History

1960

Westlers established in Hull by brothers-in-law Alick Burdon-Cooper and Charles Breese, together with old family friend Donald Watson. At that time they purchased the canned frankfurter business of Hull-based Ostlers and initially operated from premises in Wheeler Street in Hull, manufacturing canned frankfurters in brine.

1963

Westlers moves to its current location Amotherby, Malton, North Yorkshire – still only producing Frankfurters and using three van salesmen for distribution throughout Yorkshire.

1963

A second ‘hot snack’ line meant Westlers could now produce Hamburgers which increased sales dramatically resulting in a move to larger premises and the foundation of a national distribution system.

1975

A range of consumer packs were launched, based on the popular catering packs, in order to respond to the numerous enquiries from home and abroad.

1988

The pouched frankfurters were launched (Merlin Gourmet Hot Dogs) using the very latest vac-pack technology.

1999

Westlers acquired the Chesswood brand name and product range from Sharwood's for canned mushrooms. The brand was relaunched and a range of added value vegetable products joined the range including Chesswood Organics.

2003

Westlers bought Tyne Brand from Masterfoods and relaunched the brand with a range of canned meat products.

2004

Henry Breese (the third generation of the Breese family) took control as Managing Director and the company embarked on a massive reform. The whole company including sales, admin and production underwent a restructure to meet the demands of the modern trade and consumer needs.

Westlers today produces over 240 different products with a total turnover of over £22million p.a.
